Project Chairity

Raising funds for terminally ill children by repurposing surplus furniture

My Story

A pivotal moment in my decision to focus on waste from the hospitality industry, particularly furniture waste, came during my second visit to New Delhi, India, three years ago. Walking through the streets, I noticed piles of discarded furniture—chairs, tables, lamps, and more—abandoned on the sidewalks. What struck me even more was seeing homeless individuals rummaging through these piles, searching for items they could use or repurpose.

That experience stayed with me and planted a seed of curiosity: why couldn’t this furniture, with its untapped potential, be systematically repurposed instead of simply discarded? When I shared this thought with my dad, he not only encouraged me but also provided valuable insights into the sheer scale of waste generated by the hospitality industry. He explained how hotels, restaurants, and corporate offices often discard functional furniture, leading to unnecessary waste and financial inefficiency.

About Project
Chairity

Instead of letting this furniture waste, Project Chairty aims to repurpose it to create real impact. By collecting and reselling surplus office furniture from local businesses, Charity not only extends the life cycle of these materials but also generates funds for causes that matter—such as supporting terminally ill children. This approach is a win-win: it reduces environmental harm, saves companies disposal costs, and channels resources toward making a difference in people's lives.

Partnership + Impact

Through a transformative partnership with the local nonprofit organization A Kid Again, Project Chairity has raised over $50,000 by successfully liquidating more than 10,000 pieces of surplus office furniture across six major liquidation efforts. These funds have been dedicated to creating unforgettable experiences for terminally ill children, providing them with the opportunity to visit Cedar Point—a place where they can enjoy moments of joy and freedom.

Each liquidation event represents a carefully coordinated effort, where corporate partners donate their excess furniture instead of discarding it. By refurbishing, repurposing, or reselling these items, we ensure that the proceeds directly support A Kid Again's mission to bring happiness to children facing unimaginable challenges.

The impact of these liquidation efforts extends far beyond financial contributions, making a tangible difference in sustainability and community well-being. By repurposing or reselling over 10,000 pieces of furniture during six major liquidation events, Project Chairity has diverted approximately 200 tons of waste from landfills—equivalent to the weight of nearly 50 adult elephants.

This effort significantly reduces environmental harm by cutting down on the methane emissions generated by decomposing materials in landfills. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), every ton of office furniture diverted from waste contributes to preventing up to 2.5 metric tons of CO₂ emissions, meaning Chairity’s work has potentially saved 500 metric tons of CO₂ from entering the atmosphere—a significant step toward combating climate change.

Our past liquidations have been instrumental in turning surplus hospitality industry items into meaningful contributions. The total sum of liquidations amounts to $643,700, but portions of this are still subject to revenue-sharing agreements with the businesses we partner with. After accounting for these agreements, approximately $50,000 from these liquidations is earmarked for A Kid Again, primarily to support trips to Cedar Point for children battling terminal illnesses. Below, you will find the records related to our liquidation. Project Chairity + A Kid Again

Our chapter serves over 4,000 families, and these Adventures can get very expensive to cover for each family (caregivers and siblings included). That’s where Project Chairity comes in. The purpose of Project Chairity is to take something unwanted (hotel furniture) and use the funds to bring joy and hope to families in the area that need it most.
